Understanding who you're working with ensures success

Meet Don Mathews

A Professional Engineer...

Don Mathews, a professional engineer, applies his proficiency in process modeling to optimize operations across diverse industries. Established companies like Imperial Oil, Dow Chemical, and Fluor have recognized and appreciated his engineering work.

His understanding of Project Engineering and Process Modeling aids him in uncovering areas of corporate improvement, leading to streamlined operations and better resource allocation. Early in his career, Don was a designer of automation machinery, specializing in web handling equipment. Every new design started with a mapping of requirements and process.

“In any engineering process that I document or create, it is important to identify the connection between the project and the company’s values.”

As his career took him from design of automated systems to project management, he discovered that many project engineering issues stemmed from communication and lack of process knowledge.

A strong understanding of business complements his engineering expertise. This comes from his volunteer contributions to the non-profit world. Over the years Don has volunteered his time to the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME), National Society of Professional Engineers (NSPE), Toastmasters, United Methodist Church, Citizens for PRT (CPRT), Urban Systems Laboratory (USL), Underwater Society of America (USOA), and World Confederation of Underwater Activities (CMAS). Don has been involved with incubating two of these non-profits from an idea to a bone fide 501(c)3 tax exempt status. His local church benefited from him turning the declining financial operation into a transparent, fiscally responsible system that promoted membership growth.

His skill in handling design reviews, mitigating problems, and resolving conflicts have proven invaluable to many companies aiming for operational excellence.

Don Mathews brings a rare blend of engineering skills and business understanding. His commitment to improving processes and his unwavering focus on client success make him a strategic partner for any business looking to enhance its operational efficiency. With Don, you’re not just hiring an engineering consultant; you’re gaining a collaborator adept at aligning engineering solutions with business objectives.

My Guideline for Working on Developing Client Processes

Document current process

Even though a process is well known and established, documenting it often makes errors, redundancies, and inefficiencies obvious. Also, no matter how bad a process seems to be, there are always elements within the process that are effective and have merit.

Analyze

In this step, we discover what elements are important to keep, and what needs to change. This discovery period involves all stakeholders that are involved with the process or are affected by the process.

  1. What is working & not working?
  2. What can be automated?
  3. Who will be affected by changes?
  4. How do we improve the process to make it more efficient, convenient, and simplified?

Proposal of process change

With the input gathered in the analysis phase, I present a new proposed process diagram. I walk through the steps and gather input from the stakeholders. People will support change if they have participated in making the change happen.

Implementation of process change

I work with the tools you already have to automate many of the process steps. Any data entered shall be entered only once, and shall be entered only if it can’t be looked up in an existing data table.
